Nothing wrong with having a security blanket!

Have you ever had a security blanket growing up? Well, I sure had one. My blanket was soft and had the pink satin all around the edges. I took that blanket everywhere I went. I never left home with out it. It was there when Mom and Dad could not be. The blanket was my friend. My friend looked pretty shabby as the washings and years went by.

When my daughter was born, I wondered if she would have a security blanket too. She did. My daughter's security blanket happened to be one of her baby sheets in her crib. Of all the beautiful blankets she had, she picked a crib sheet out. This sheet went everywhere with her. I cannot count the hours we spent looking for this thing before we went somewhere. We made sure we brought it home when we left from somewhere. Many relatives found it funny (as I did not) to take her blanket and tease her with it. She seemed to be ok as long as the sheet returned to her safely. Her sheet ended up being a 2-inch-by-2-inch piece as the years went by. She was just a little thing and looked so cute with her blankie and of course the thumb.

Now, my granddaughter has a blanket just like her Grandma and Mother did. We look for this blanket when she is getting ready to leave. We always make sure she has it for her naps and at nighttime if she spends the night. It goes everywhere with her.

Not only is this cute to see a little one with a security blanket, but it is also very comforting to a toddler. As your child heads toward the toddler age, he or she is starting to realize that Mom is not always around. Maybe you have to bring him or her to the daycare and having a little piece of home helps reassure your little one you are close. Even going the Grandpa and Grandma’s can be little scary, after all your little one does not see them all the time. Yes, they know them, but they are not Mom. Even at bed time there will be a moment of separation from Mom and having a blanket to hold will help reassure them. You never know which object your child will pick as a security item. It could be a teddy bear, crib sheet, or a blanket. Not every child needs a security blanket, so don’t be alarmed if yours does not require one. Also, don’t be alarmed if yours needs one.
